On her flight back from Scotland from a business presentation, the plane Emma is on goes through some major turbulences, and Emma is certain that she will die – that no one will survive this flight. We believe in logistical formative alliances,’ he’s saying in a nasal, droning voice, ‘both above and below the line.

That’s why I will remember Can you keep a Secret as a book that made me laugh – actually made me laugh out loud – and not as the one with the greatest male character ever (although he was nice too, if it wasn’t for the big tv-exposure…), but that is fine. She is no longer able to use all the small social lies she would normally tell to smoothe things over or make a good impression on him, and he knows it – and rather enjoys twitting her about them.movie, but it also makes a great deal of sense and is arguably an even better ending than Kinsella's book.

Sammy the goldfish at home isn’t the same goldfish that Mum and Dad gave me to look after when they went to Egypt. How the coffee at work is horrible… how she once threw a troublesome client file in the bin… If ever there was a bare soul, it’s hers. She also paints a picture of a dysfunctional marriage with a work-driven husband who throws money instead of time and love at his increasingly dependent wife.Whenever a book is adapted into a film, there's bound to be casualties left on the cutting room floor. Just between us superannuated schoolgirls, she hasn't the faintest idea what NATO is, and she has never, ever told her boyfriend Connor that she actually weighs 128 pounds, not 118.

In Larchmont, New York a mansion ablaze with a thin, blond woman in her nightwear screaming that her son, Benjamin is trapped inside. Determined to prove to her family that she can stick to her current job, Emma tries her best to receive opportunities that can help her be promoted, and luckily receives one. Because Emma is so likable a character, his putting things to rights for her is a big fat warm fuzzy for the reader. While they are in the air, the plane experiences an uncomfortable amount of turbulence so that Emma can’t ease her nerves anywhere but by drinking more vodka tonics than she can without becoming drunk. Lindsey’s days at Thornbury were happy ones but she never quite fit in to the upper middle class family and she was very much under Rachel’s spell.

Spoiler alert: I thought the crisis/reconciliation she had with her family could have described more personal growth on her.

Connor actually works in a different division at the same company as Emma, but she comes to terms – during the flight, too – that she and Connor just aren’t meant to be. Another welcome touch is that Emma’s boyfriend isn’t a complete rotter like so many of boyfriends in Chick Lit. The main character, Emma Corrigan, seems to have it all – a great job, a lovely boyfriend and great friends. In the ambitions and aspirations of Emma, she sees this as her opportunity to transcend from assistant to an executive. I guess it’s a normal thing for a Sophie Kinsella book — everyone hates you, you job sucks, your life is miserable but it still goes on.Fast forward to September 2001 and Caitlin was in New York for six weeks, visiting and staying with the man she loved. I thought I understood where it was going, only to be left wondering how it got to the point it did. Emma's life is turned upside down by this man who knows all the humiliating details of her life - like the fact that she's never been in love despite being in a long-term relationship.
